About LabCompass
What this is
Choosing a graduate advisor shapes your next five to seven years more than choosing a university — yet most of the information that matters is scattered or invisible. LabCompass puts it in one place: 20,795 principal-investigator profiles across Indiana University, Purdue University West Lafayette, The Ohio State University, built from 939,474 publications' worth of public scholarly data — research topics, publication activity, estimated group size, and career-stage context.
Where the data comes from
Profiles are generated automatically from OpenAlex, the open index of scholarly work. We derive metrics from publication records only — no scraping of personal pages, no inferred personal attributes. Numbers like group size and activity level are estimates derived from co-authorship patterns and publication dates, and are labeled as such. AI-generated research summaries are always marked as AI-generated, with the model that produced them shown on the profile.
Corrections
Scholarly databases contain errors — merged author records, stale affiliations, missing work. Every profile carries a link to claim or correct it. If a profile about you is wrong, email claims@labcompass.app and we'll fix it.

LabCompass is an independent project, not affiliated with any university listed on the site. It's free to use, has no ads, and doesn't sell data — see the privacy page for exactly what we do (and don't) collect.
